I was born in America. Im 86 percent Swedish. Im 99 percent Swedish at Christmas. Meaning traditions and food. Now add in that I’m 100 percent Christian. Out of total Curiosity why is the birth of Christ not even spoken of? Does Sweden acknowledge the birth of Christ? I know both countries are falling away from Christianity but I wasn’t sure your take was personal or country.
I know this is really late but whatever. In my family we almost always start off the Christmas Eve with presents from our parents only under the tree in the morning , then at 3 pm we watch Kalle ankas jul either alone with just my parents and brother. Or it could be with our other family members such as our aunts, grandparents etc. Then while we’re watching we always eat fika, either soft ginger bread (mjuk pepparkaka), normal gingerbread cookies, Aladin chocolate, saft (don’t think there’s an English translation but basically strawberry juice), coffee and maybe some glögg as well. Then last but not least we all come together in the evening with our entire family (either the family from my moms side or dads side, we switch every year) to eat, open presents from our grandparents aunts etc, then some fika at the end. That fika usually is orange sallad, risalamalta, vanilla icecream and more. It depends.
In my family here in sweden we also watch when they celebrate the 200+ years of peace between Sweden and Finland.
Just to 'slay' (as yo called it) just little. It's for the house gnome who you put porridge out, not santa. If you don't the gnome won't take care of your house so cattle will die, crops won't grow etc. I mean it as a friendly comment 😉
Chocolate chip cookies? Wtf kind of America does she live in? Pretty sure you make and decorate Christmas sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles not chocolate chip cookies.
Did you just say hygge? That's Danish haha. Maybe it's skånska too, men ingen jävel som vet vad det är utanför Skåne eller? Haha, you used a clip that isn't a part of the actual version we see on TV.
Thank you for making this video. My husband is half Swedish, but grew up here in America. Now that we have kids I am looking for ways to teach them about their heritage, but he only knows American Christmas traditions. His grandmother has Swedish decorations and traditions, but it's hard to get her to talk about them. This video is very helpful!
Had an accident 7 months ago. After they kicked me out hte hostpial I sat home, got really bored. After a while I started too follow dirrerent Vlogs on youtube, such as yours. Love your channel. But, when it comes to traditional chr4istmas tv-shows you have fortotten 2. And that is Karl-Beritl Jonssons julafton and Tomten är far till alla barnen. I have outgrown Donald Duck, I´m 60 y. o. But the 2 others are holy to me.
I'm not an expert, but I don't think Lucia have ever been an Italian tradition. Lucia herself was Italian, but as far as I know she's only celebrated in Sweden and nowhere else in the world. If somebody knows better, I'm happy to learn about it so feel free to correct me. 🙂
Swedish and Danish Christmas traditions are quite similar. If I remember correctly, the 26. of December is a big day in the US for a lot of American football games. Christmas is called Jul in all three Scandinavian languages. It was originally a pre-Christian winter solstice tradition of celebrating the return of the sun and involved plenty of food and lots of mjød, an ancient alcoholic beverage. Since the Church fathers couldn’t get the Scandinavian Vikings to use the word Kristmesse – Mass for Christ, they just ended up with accepting the pagan solstice ritual. If you can’t beat them, then join them. 🤣
I’m in New York and last year for Christmas I went to see the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center with my boyfriend while my son was with his father this year we’re going to do a Christmas Eve and make it a family thing at least I’m hoping to do that ( it’s supposed to rain ) and maybe go to the Empire State Building ( what I thinking of the weather may be an issue though). Better than staying in like we have been. A friend of mine who lives in Manhattan said he always goes to see the tree every year on Christmas.
Thea reason we dont have so many red santas is because thats an American coca-cola houx i believe, in my familiy we call the red santa "coca-cola santa" or "usa santa", the grey one is more close to nordic mythology and resembles little "santas" running along your farm and such
We go to Christmas Eve. Service at our church as a family. The week before we go caroling in our neighborhood. We set up a nativity in our house. Basically we celebrate Jesus birth..
The Disney/Donald duck tradition in Sweden roots from a time (before 1985) when there hardly was any Disney broadcasted, so Swedes and their kids were starving Disney content. Thats my take on it. In later years they have changed the last bit to promote newer Disney productions. Many adults fall asleep during this as it's a break from all the Christmas work lol.
Swedish people do not celebrate Christmas we celebrate Yule and no…its not the same thing, take it from a guy who is Swedish but live in the U.S. Waaaay to much Christianity fused with old Germanian tradition in the U.S most of them have no idea where these traditions even came from….when they learn that Santa Claus is originally the Scandinavian father God Oden they always seem somewhat confused and then they tend to get angry lol
Loved the vid. Girl with curly hair OMG. Not slatting you but neither of you said what Christmas is really about. And yes in UK its now to commercialised as well. Happy Christmas to you and yours when it comes.
The Donald Duck thing is so true! I had a Swedish exchange student in 2018 and she made us look it up on YouTube and watch it. She was also sad she had to wait until dec 25th to open presents so we let her open her stocking on the 24th
The Donald Duck compilation has become a tradition as a residue from the time back when Sweden only had one TV-channel and there was nothing else to watch. And then I guess it just… remained. Now us Swedes are very strict about our Donald Duck time on Christmas eve. If the public service broadcasting channel would ever consider cancelling it the Swedes would go berserk.
Im in the US and in my home we celebrate Yule on the Winter solstice…and we welcome the SUN early in the morning and we thank Father Winter for the blessings during the season…we light a Yule log and exchange gifted wrapped sweets and items of necesities as in old traditions when the cold season hits you run the risk of running out of food or items of real need so that is what is exchanged in my home to help keep you and your family sustained during the winter months…..because its the dark time of thw yesr we bring in the tree representing earth's gifts of greenery into the home….lots of delicious foods and organic decor all over the home….back home in the Caribbean we celebrate January 6th 3 kings day and the kids gather a shoe box fill it with grass and put it under their beds so when the 3 wise men arrive and leave a gift for ea h child in the home he camels are eating the grass from the shoe box the kids collected… Camals have to keep up their strength as the ride along the entire island all in one night.
2:40 Being Lucia is basically the Swedish equivalent of being Prom Queen in schools. Then local papers will have votes on who should be the towns Lucia, and she'll be going to different locations (usually old folks homes) to sing the customary songs while the runner ups get to be the Lucia maidens (tärna), in schools, boys might be "star boys" gingerbread men or santas, the star boys are dressed in white togas same as the lucia and maids, but with a cone on his head with golden stars on it and maybe a wand with a star on the tip, the maids have a bare wreath on their heads and a candle in their hands while the lucia wear a wreath with candles in it on her head.
Thank you for sharing. I learned a lot from both of you and I love the stories that you're both told about Christmas and Santa and Donald Duck and porridge,…
