Magdalen College Professor Anthony Esolen is not only an eminent man of literature, he is also a walking encyclopedia of cinema. That definitely included movies set against or directly about, Christmas. In this free-wheeling conversation featuring brushes with fame and interconnectivity of actors who worked with the same directors, we hit many favorites and also some lesser-known Christmas movie nuggets.

Pity it was cut off! I distinctly remember disliking The Bishop’s Wife, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it and don’t recall details. Except the “angel falls in love with mortal woman and would give up heaven for her” trope (give me a break). Going to see if the show notes shed any light. I’ve got a to-watch list now! Thank you so much for this!
Love Anthony Esolen!❤️🙏🏻❤️
What happened? Great show, but just cut off.
Looking for some insight here.
Several times during this episode they both mention “the code.” I’m pretty sure this is not synonymous with Hemingway’s “code.” Any idea what they mean?
Also, when Coffin references “Green Dolphin Street” and says, “starring Donna Reed of all people,” what does he mean by that remark?
I agree with the golden era of movies.
Watched The Miracle of Morgan's Creek last night. Very funny film, but to call it a Christmas film is extremely generous.
You gave us a bunch of desperately sad movies. O pitiful, degenerate moderns! The abyss is all you know.
I get excited to see A.Esolen on your show, but both times (specifically with him) the audio is pretty poor. Ever sibilant sound on this one causes speaker cracking
As a non native English speaker I can just say that the quality of the sound was rather poor so I didn't quite understand what movies you recommend. Nevertheless have a merry Christmas!
You didn't mention come to the stable
It was great hearing you talk about some of my lesser known favorites like Remember the Night. ❣ The ending sparks a debate every year in my family.
In my experience of the catholic church, they're for the most part holding the american narrative and war rationalizations as supreme and simply add the christian faith to their deck of judaized socially-engineered cards. Definently not consistent with father Coghlan. There's sparse working in either process or conclusion of the spirit of Logos. It's there, but it's the exception and not the rule.
Good point about the fruits of the production code (where they scaled-back their judaizing social engineering prosperity to making it much more subtle) that only resulted from the Legion of Decency.
What about Going My Way with Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald? I’m watching it now and I cry every time I see the end.
Is there a part two?
Such a great show! What a beautiful change and relief from political topics!
Sleepless in Seattle with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks not bad but cannot beat out An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr ……GET THE TISSUE BOX OUT! Real tear jerker!
What happened it just cut off at the end of the video?
If anyone can please make a list of these movies for those of struggling with the sound issues, that would be a great Christmas present to all of us who struggle with hearing impairments. Thank you 🙏🎄
Why can't you be like Corbett from the Corbett report instead of selling pillows how to run your business with selling products for Christ
Gentlemen: Although, it’s not a Christmas movie, it does take place at New Year’s Eve; My Man Godfrey. A forgotten man story taking place during the Great Depression. Another screwball comedy starring William Powell and Carol Lombard. Very self- sacrificial. Great dialogue.
After reading so much of Anthony Esolen's writings in The Magnificat Catholic Magazine that just lift my heart and that both my husband and I enjoy so much, it was nice to actually see what Dr. Esolen looks like and hear him speak! Thanks!
Die Hard Forever…..
This was delightful, refreshing, restorative to the heart… Thank you, gentlemen for sharing this conversation – I Really enjoyed it. Wishing you both a Very Blessed Christmas!
Sound quality poor
