Growing up we did not open our gift right away. Instead my Dad wanted to make Christmas last all day. So through out the day, at random moments he would yell out "present time" and we all got to open 1 gift.
Great video. We always go to our city tree lighting ceremony where they have booths set up for the kids to get free Christmas crafts. We too go and look at lights in the neighborhood. We always add an ornament to the city tree without anyone knowing just to have it on there. We go back throughout the season and see that no one has messed with them and the kids love it. We go caroling as a church and visit all the people that can't make it or who need encouragement and uplifting.
Every year I wrap a new pair of Christmas pajamas for my son and on a random evening when he thinks heโs going to bed, heโll go in his room and see the gift on his bed. He knows by now whatโs in it and what comes next. He puts them on and we hop in the car and get a box of hot donuts from Krispy Kreme and hot chocolate from Starbucks and then we drive around looking at Christmas lights. Super fun night during the Christmas season!
We have a lot of the same traditions you do too!!!
Love this time of year! ๐ฅฐ
We do a lot of what you do โค๏ธ we also do gingerbread houses. Another thing we do is read Christmas books as our count down. I would love to try making your peppermint popcorn. It sounds delicious ๐
Love all of the sweet family traditions. The Hallmark movie comment made me laugh. My cousin and her husband write a bunch of Hallmark Christmas movies!
I would love to see a recipe for the popcorn!
We kinda do your wrapping paper tradition but we do labels or themes like one year I made snowmen and the scarfed where all different and they have fun trying to guess what one is theirs. We have done the seven dwarves and rain deer and more itโs fun to see them try to guess. This year they have a scripture tag and it leads to one of the many names Jesusโs has in the Bible. My kids love it Christ center Christmas is the theme this year.
We have some of the same traditions!!!!! Ornaments, secret Santa. Love it!!!!!!!
Love Christmas Traditions too!!!!! We do a spin on Elf's the movie spaghetti seen and do Elf pancakes and pile on the sugar and then watch the movie, we pick up chick FIL a in the drive thru and drive around and look at Christmas lights and another favorite is Advent and Christmas book reading.
I love the wrapping paper tradition. We love going to church on Christmas Eve and then pick up Chinese food afterโฆ a nod to A Christmas Story.
Loved this video! We have a lot of the same traditions. Christmas Eve pajamas. Breakfast Christmas morning. I also wrap each persons gifts in their own wrapping paper. My oldest is married and they come over early Christmas morning to watch the younger kids open gifts. Love Christmas!!!
Love these! Have you read Memory Making Mom by Jessica Smartt? One of my favorite reads this year and she has so many good ideas for traditions ๐ฅฐ
Totally starting the wrapping paper tradition!!!
What Cinnamon rolls do you make? Homemade or which brand? I'm thinking thats a good idea ๐๐
Love your videos. You are so beautiful and helpful ๐
Your family is just the sweetest, I love how wholesome and sweet your children still are, despite being older. I hope and pray I can raise my babies in the same wonderful way. Fun random fact: my sister in law used to work with Jake when she was in his side of the department ( I wonโt say which one because I donโt trust the internet). She has since moved on to counter terrorism, but she told me Jake is super nice and that she remembers he always had the best lunches that his wife would pack for him. My husband also works on the department, doesnโt know Jake though. Enough rambling though lol…our favorite Christmas tradition is baking gingerbread men cookies together. My kids look forward to that more than anything else, theyโre still 7 and under so itโs the little things they get excited for. You gave many great ideas that I look forward to implementing in our home, thank you! โบ๏ธ
We have a lot of similar traditions as youโChristmas Eve candlelight church service, holiday light drive in jammies with hot cocoa (and donuts), cinnamon rolls for breakfastโthough we/I spend the 24th making and baking them and handing them out to a handful of lucky friends ๐คฃ, shopping date with husband, etc. My husband and I have been watching Hallmark movies tooโhe joined in last year and is all about the cheese factor with me.
My daughter was born in Germany (my husband too actually !) so while we arenโt German, we celebrate St. Nicholas Day every year. We also do advent with Christmas books Iโve collected over the years and they open one a day. I switch them out as we outgrow certain ones but most are the same each year. Iโd say our biggest โtraditionโ is not traveling on/for Christmas and staying home all day together, usually in our pjโs. Weโve done plenty of fun trips in December but not for Christmas.
I love the wrapping paper idea!!
Our traditions:
I made us a huge felt countdown calendar that we take turns doing – one of my favorites!
We buy them an ornament to represent their year (one won baseball championship so he gets a baseball one this year) and they open on Christmas Eve.
Baked French toast on our Christmas morning
Christmas Eve dinner and watch White Christmas on Christmas Eve at Papa and Mimiโs house
For the last week Iโve been wondering about traditions other people have with their children at Christmas. As a new mom I really wanted some ideas of ways we could make the holiday special and more meaningful. Thank you so much for sharing! Love these ideas and the comment section as well. โค๏ธ๐
A tradition we enjoy every year is going to our state Capitol's lighting ceremony. It's always near my oldest son's birthday too. So beautiful to see the lights come on all over the Capitol. Fireworks too! City and state officials speak, Santa and Mrs. Claus make an appearance, military are recognized. So great! We look forward to it every year.
I loved the wrapping paper idea, definitely will have to try that one. I also love watching the cheesy lifetime movies every year. Just something about them that make me light up. Great ideas, thanks for sharing ๐
Grace you have cool traditions
Cinnamon rolls are good
Yes leading up to Christmas
I just want to say what an amazing job you do with your children, especially considering that you had a troubled childhood and probably didn't have the example you hoped for. Merry Christmas!!
Such great traditions, I'll be stealing a few of these!! ๐
How fun!! I am definitely doing the wrapping paper idea!! ๐๐ฒ
so when do you give your kids their christmas pajamas if they wear them before christmas?
Loved the video! Popcorn recipe needed! Does anyone remember which video it was?? Thanks!!
I made your peppermint popcorn the year your shared it and my daughter loved it and has been asking for it since. She was just diagnosed with celiac disease and I can't even tell you how relieved she was that she can still have the peppermint popcorn. Thank you for sharing your recipe, something so simple made a huge difference to my girl who got a food limiting diagnosis right before the holidays!
Love it all! Taking a few to use myself! One of my favorites we do is Xmas Eve they open PJs and a book. And the 12 days leading up to Christmas we โsecret elfโ baked goodies to people. Totally ding dong ditch them on their porch. Have been caught several times on their Ring doorbells (but they are so sweet to not let my kids know). And the joy it gives them to give those gifts without any praise or anything in return is so valuable to me. They ask about it every year. And my two grown kids even jump in when they can because they live those memories from when they were younger.
We have lots of traditions too ๐ to name a few- Christmas eve boxes, secret sibling gifts, movie nights, homemade ornaments, orange rolls Christmas morn (bc that's what my husband always did growing up) and more. So fun.
I started the wrapping paper idea last year too!
So fun to read otherโs traditions! ๐ My daughter and I always look forward to hanging the ornaments on the tree together and remembering the story behind each one. We love to drive around and look at lights, but Iโm going to add hot chocolate and your peppermint popcorn!
Loved these traditions! Thanks for sharing them with us.
A tradition my husband actually started without realizing it one year was ,as a gag, he bought gifts for us from the dollar store that totally suited each of us. It was so much fun we each started doing it every year. So much fun and lots of good memories.
Youโre an amazing mom making wonderful memories for your family. I forgot about your peppermint popcorn. Please do share your recipe, on IG maybe?!!
I can relate to the childhood stuff. I donโt have a ton of good memories around Christmas as a child and Iโm determined to do it differently with my kids.
1. Each child has their own wrapping paper. I actually let them pick out what kind they want. we donโt put the presents under the tree until Christmas Eve after the kids are asleep. We have a couple little kids that wouldnโt leave them alone. ๐
2. They get new Christmas jammies each year.
3. We buy gifts for children in our community. Our church โadoptsโ many families each year to help make Christmas possible for them. The kiddos from our church get to go on a huge shopping trip as a group. They work hard to raise money for this mission. Itโs the sweetest thing when they put their whole heart into serving. My daughter made dog treats to sell and my son made cookies to sell. I am so proud of them โค๏ธ
Love all of your traditions! I have found that the simple things really matter. One thing we have always done is open stockings on Christmas Eve night. The kids love it and get to enjoy those small things before opening their other bigger gift or gifts on Christmas Day. We also do the lights and hot chocolate, Advent lego calendars, Christmas brunch with my family and I am starting the tradition of cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning this year. Three of us four have celiac disease so I found a gluten and dairy free recipe that I am going to try and I hope they turn out well and become a new tradition where I can teach them how to make them for her own families one day. Thanks for always sharing with us! ๐
Thanks for sharing your traditions!
Loooove the different color wrapping paper idea!
A few of our Traditions are : we acknowledge Hanukkah ๐ and incorporate the traditions of the Jewish faith into our Christmas ! We bake cookies ๐ช, love to do the Angel Tree ๐!!!! Those are just a few to name ๐คถ๐ป๐ ๐ป๐๐
Every year we try to go out of Christmas Eve to see the Christmas lights. New pajamas every year. New ornament every year
1. We also do cinnamon rolls or cinnamon french toast on Christmas morning.
2. Our talking nativity is played.
3. As many activities to give to others and be together as a family as possible.โค
All 5 kids get matching jammies Dec 1st to wear all month long (and longer)
We read Jesus' birth story before opening gifts on Christmas day
Make Roll out sugar cookies and frosting them
Make homemade gingerbread men
Crafts
Christmas movies. We always start with Elf the day after Thanksgiving and end with Christmas Story on Christmas day with all other movies sprinkled throughout of course
Thanks!! Fun video
Love this video, Ashlee! We have a pajama box tradition, pizza on Christmas Eve, new ornaments for the kiddos and homemade cinnamon rolls Christmas morning as well! ๐
Fun video! Please share your yummy sounding recipe for peppermint popcorn! ๐ฟ ๐
Awesome traditions! So a few we do that is so cherished: go caroling through our neighborhood, the kids write letters/make cards to send to family or friends that they feel need love, appreciation or some joy, and we make ginger cookies!
