Nothing shamefull about the British Empire, you have to see it in that time. Every western country had colonies, it was what it was.

The empire is certainly not 'dark, shameful and oppressive' for anyone who has read serious history. May I suggest you start with Jeremy Black's books on the subject and Nigel Biggar's forthcoming study?
I love Christmas pudding but only my grandmas recipe, Iβve tried others and it feels like theyβre intentionally unpleasant lol
It is simplistic and simply untrue to say the British Empire was merely ' dark and shameful'. It is a pity that British universities are committed to teaching ideological revisionist interpretations of history when claiming to teach literature. It seems, as a good student , Ruby knows how to give the lecturers what they want but i hope in time she will gain some perspective and see that she has been often indoctrinated and that there are truer, more generous perspectives of British history to be had outside of university.
7:10 seeing Australia makes me happy- literally for no reason besides the fact that I live here π§πΌββοΈ
Modern historians have an agenda and are rewriting history according to how they see it from a modern perspective and would therefore make you believe that everything the British did around the world was shameful because they only focus on the negative. However, peoplesβ quality of life improved by bringing in education, healthcare, compassion for the poor and practical help. They passed on their ingenuity e.g. they built railways, public buildings, improved sanitation, abolished the practice of burning Indian widows alive when their husbands had passed away etc. So there is a lot that is presently just ignored. Of course, where ever you look at history people in superior positions have enjoyed their privilege but I think that the British nation like no other, compared to the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French etc left behind a legacy which has enabled developing countries to rise up out of the mire and see the value of western civilisation. There will always be those who are profiteers and when we look at Zimbabwe and South Africa we can see that these very rich countries in natural resources are in a dreadful state because their leaders are exploiting them. That is human nature at its worst and I also believe that when you look at individual examples of what the British did all around the world, we can see them at their best. π¦πͺ²πͺ·
Is it maybe John Bull on the card – it would make sense if Christmas pudding represented Britishness.
It's aesthetic β¨β¨β¨
Would have loved to see this video without the weird leftwing propaganda cuts. Boohoohoo "oppressive" "bad" British empire…. historical revisionism isn't witty.
ruby quoting marx, we stan
Plum puddings also hark back to Mediaeval times when the English loved mixing spices and fruit with meat. Mince pies originally contained minced beef, spices, fruit and brandy (I have made them before and they are really, really good).
M R James…read M R James at Christmas. M R James…
The British empire also did good!ππ
I really enjoyed the informal style of this video!! And thanks for acknowledging that not everyone celebrates Christmas at the end (which is also quite relevant to the British empire segment, in that forced assimilation into a homogeneous Christian population is strongly linked to European colonialism).
Do you know about any countries colonized by Britain during Victorian era? Most probably 99% of you don't even know what is colonialism. sad but true. i like almost all of your videos , but when i see/hear "Victorian" it makes me real uncomfortable. things aside love your channel keep it up. ππΌ
