In Portland Oregon we have the Orginal "Peacock Lane"-which is comparable to "Candy Cane Lane" in this Movie—Peacock Lane has been around for well over 60 years plus or more. Due to high electrical bills and such, they now only light up DECEMBER 15 through DECEBER 31st. it used to be the entire month of December. They Santa, and horse and hay rides, and hot chocolate booth selling cider, coffee and hot cocoa. The street goes straight through from one side to another side, not a cauldesac.
In some years it required police to help with traffic, some nights were designated pedestrian traffic only, some nights are cars only, with traffice flowing through one way, and exiting the other.
To own a house or rent on Peacock Lane, everyone has to sign an agreement with the neighborhood association to decorate their houses for Christmas. Residents that have lived there a lifetime, aging, have help from neighbors to put up their lights. Each house has their own designated lights which are the same every year. AS it is expensive to have those displays.
Families who have lived there say it is like living in a fishbowl during this time, having people peep in your windows. So the living room of their house has a Christmas tree on display, plugged in, then they tarp off the area, blocking it off, so that they can have privacy in the rest of their house, curtains closed off to the rest of their windows in their houses. Decorations over all the windows. Lights come on at 6pm through to Midnight. Now today that has been modified too–7Pm to about 11:30pm. Anything to save some money. ONLY on Christmas EVE and Christmas DAY and New Years eve do the lights come on at 6pm or as soon as it is dark–about 5pm and remain on until 1am like they did in years past.
Many years ago, as a child, I used to go down Peacock Lane and walk it with my parents there was live deer–others animals! it was fun, but due to wild gangs and rowdy teenagers no more live nativity scenes or live animals. AS it is sometimes the decorate displays are vandalized. Which is sad. They almost decided to shut down Peaccock Lane due to vandalism, but received overwhelming support from the news media, many blocks of neighbors and monetary donations to keep it going. Also physical help with the work up putting up displays and taking them down. So, all the home owners/renters decided to keep it going for now.
It was a 60 year tradition with my family to go down Peacock lane as a family, but as each of us wound up on our own, we did not have time to gather as a family all of us, and go in one vehicle anymore. One brother is now in a nursing facility. Many of us individually would tour Peacock lane on our own using mass transit, as buses do go right by that street. But now, I too, am bedridden in a hospital bed, and can longer go see it. This is why this movie is so special, it reminds me of Peacock Lane, here in Portland, which is a mere 13 miles from where I am living in Gresham. For me a pleasant reminder of my childhood and those memories of long ago.
Thanks for the movie, thanks for letting me share. I am sure others have such stories to tell too–share them, I would love to hear about other places around the world, and the USA that do such neat things too. God bless, from Gresham Oregon USA
