I am slightly flabbergasted where you did your research on the history of these traditions.
A quick Google search confirmed what I remembered about the Jul goat and St. Lucy.
The Jul goat is a Germanic fertility symbol, ultimately a representation of Thor. It plays a part in many celebrations surrounding the new year – twelfth night – in various guises in many Germanic countries.
St. Lucy was a Sicilian saint famous for bringing food for Christians in hiding in some caves or catacombs. She placed her candle on her head in order to be able to carry more food. Her saint day is 13 December. That this merged with a celebration of light in the darkest time of the year makes sense.
Lucy means light, derived from Latin lux. As does Lucifer who was after all one of the top angels before his fall.
Very interesting! Thanks so much. ♥️
I like the picture of Findus the cat dressing up as a “Lucia” with candles on his head and delivering coffee and saffron bread rolls! It’s in a children’s book by Sven Nyqvist. ❤
Well, the only experience I have of a 'Swedish Xmas' is in a Swedish Pub in London (the Harcourt I think), one Christmas Eve, all the Swedes seemed to be watching old Disney cartoons; the really old black and white ones like Steamboat Willy – and me and my friend were standing in the way of the TV screen … and the more these grown up Swedes got annoyed that they couldn't see the screen, the more hilarious we found it …. but said Scandiknaves got all aggressive so we had to leave. Is this normal ¯_(ツ)_/¯?" Merry Christmas, Colin xxx
Not wierd, just Scandinavian, Do you have the gift advent calendar?
When working in Baghdad our accomadation was built by Skanska. All the craftsmen cried when a little girl appeared @ S Lucia
Glöm inte Kalle Anka
Happy Christmas
And that Star Wars Tie Fightin in your Christmas display ISN"T tacky? lol That goat is very, very interesting. So, Satan brings gifts to children? I learned a few weeks ago that Santa Claus actually used to scare children to be good and wasn't actually a nice guy until Coca Cola portrayed him as fat and jolly. When you showed Lucia with candles in her hair, I thought of the Spanish word luz, which means light, and then I thought of the fallen star, Satan. Probably not that far off. I'm starting to realize more and more that things aren't as they appear to be, and I'm a Christian.
